I've just started pulling a Chevy pickup behind my motor home. In the past I pulled a Ford and used a Brake Buddy for aux. braking. Silly me, I figured the Chevy was like the Ford, as far as key position. Needless to say, I ran the battery down on the Chevy on our first trip. I left the key in the "acc" position (first notch)just like the Ford. This does not work on the Chevy. I would appreciate any information on this.

My best advice would be to read your vehicle owner's manual.
My General Motors Hummer has a section in the manual entitled "placing vehicle in neutral for towing" which gives instructions on what position to place the transmission lever and the key.

Bob is correct. Check the owners manual.

My 2004 GMC Yukon does not require the key to turned at all. The steering wheel no longer locks on GM trucks, so the key can remain in my pocket.

I used to tow a 2002 Silverado and the key was in the ACC position for towing, but the manual tells you what fuses to pull to prevent battery from running down. However, I suspect your 2004 pickup will be the same as what Dirk describes for the 2004 Yukon - no steering lock so leave the key in your pocket (better for security). I hate to be repetitious, but check the manual.

2006 Chev 1500 crew. Same thing, key off, remove key.

Thanks for the input. I read through the manual, but I evidently missed the "point" on key position. Thanks, again.

On my 2005 GMC PU I have to leave the key in acc to keep the tranny in neutral (2-wheel drive). Using a Remco pump as they don't make a disconnect for the large driveshaft. I installed a battery disconnect and just use it when towing. So far all I've found is the radio doesn't retain it's settings and that's OK as it is always new stations when we move anyway.
