Another vote for the Honda Fit. Amazing car. 2500lbs, hold 4 comfortably and lots of storage (magic folding seats). MPG 40 plus on hwy. Super handling. I have 24,000 miles on mine (and have towed it an additional 15,000). It is a keeper!!

There are many rides in the 4,000 and under category, Adding the tow package adds perhaps 100-200 pounds tops.

One thing to note: If you have to use a drop hitch adapter to level out your tow gear this DE-RATES your hitch,, The brackets that hold the cross bar to the frame rails can fail with a drop hitch.. If you have to ask how I know.. Well,, Let's just say "Been there, Done that, got lucky (no secondary damage)"

Home is where I park it!

We have been towing a 2006 Corolla - manual - for 5 years without a problem. Towed it with a w22 coach and now a DPusher. About 2400 lbs.

All you have to do to tow it four down is to install tow brackets, lights and fuse switch. It tows well, drives well, will comfortably hold four people and cargo behind the back seat. The car is easy on gas and handles well.
Agree - have owned 2 HHRs - Great Toad

Also would suggest a MINI either the Clubman or the new Countryman

Cheap, Simple, Easy

Consider a '93-97Suzuki Sidekick, 4 door, dead simple to work on, 2600 lbs, cost about 22-2600 for a decent one on Craigs list. Carries 4 with a little space in back and cheap to insure.
