I don't know where you are, but see if you have an auto dealer in your area that specializes in lease returns. There is one in the Fort Worth area that has a lot of Jeeps. I bought a less than 3 year old, under 35,000 miles and still in warranty Wrangler for less than what people were asking for 7-8 year old Jeeps with 150,000 miles on them.

We really like our 2012 Captiva for towing. All wheel drive, automatic transmission, 4 door, comfortable even for a 6 footer, and it gets pretty good mileage on it's own!

We settled on an Ford C-Max Hybrid. Automatic transmission, very easy to do the set up for towing. Ford has several current car lines that are good for towing 4-down. We went to a Chevy dealer and were told the current Equinox was not certified for 4-down towing.

If you are looking for light it it hard to beat the Fiat 500 Pup. The thing I like about ours is hook up, shift out of gear release the park brake and go. I use a blue ox tow bar.

As other stated really depends on what you want to do when you travel.

I prefer being able to get off the main roads...... Been pulling a jeep behind our RV since the 70

Present JKU I purchased this past October, first time with a jeep as a daily driver and it's not as bad as people think. 11k miles and counting...

We ended up with the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited but to get there I talked to a lot of car dealers and about 6 months of leg and Internet work.

We had the perfect tow vehicle, a GMC Sierra 4X4 pickup but it was about 600 pounds over the limit of our RV, that was with a full tank of gas and nothing in the bed.

We talked to Subaru, we have one of those too, and found that our model and all the current ones require a trailer (4 off the ground).

We looked at the Smart Car and the Fiat but neither have a real presence here in central Alabama. I figured that a problem with either vehicle away from a major city was going to be crisis. We also knew there were major changes to the Smart for 2016 and the dealer couldn't tell us what the impact was for towing it.

I talked to a person towing a Kia Soul, then checked with the dealer. The official comment was that yes it can be towed but if we put the tow plate on it and tow it, the warranty is void. The only approved way to tow it is a dolly.

Ford has a nice description of what can be towed and how. It is very helpful.

We also looked at the Equinox and it was the backup choice.

I found that American car dealers were the most knowledgeable and willing to work with us.

For the Jeep, the ease of towing something with a 4X4 manual transfer case, not having to have the key in the ignition to disable the steering lock, it is tall enough so that it doesn't require sitting down into it, and it is fun to drive were the key characteristics we went with even though it was probably the highest cost vehicle we looked at.

We now have all the parts to tow it. It is going on a long drive on Saturday to shake out the brake system and to get a little more experience with the RV being 20 feet longer. Weather permitting, it will be in a campground next weekend.

This is the official document that I researched prior to going 4 down with my SOUL.
It specifically deals with motorhome 4 down towing.

Anyone wishing to tow a manual transmission 2015 2016 KIA (any model) would be well advised to ask about the current revision of this document. No KIA with an auto trans or 4 wheel drive is towable 4 down.

I don't trust any of the dealership talking heads.

I too am considering the Equinox. Check out the FMCA Towing Guide on their website. It claims it has to be a six speed tranny in order to tow flat?
I like the Escapes around 2010 yr. also.

Folks next to us in our last camping trip had a 2016 Equinox. Also seen Ford Escapes up to 2013
