Need to finally buy a toad, tow bar. Any recommendations? Rated to 10k. Lighter the better, inexpensive or reasonable.

If you like to get off the beaten path sometimes........The Jeep JK can't be beat for a TOAD

After a month out west.........we will never be without one.........the best sight seeing is off the beaten path

Yes, that line you see in the bottom of the canyon is the road, switch backs getting down to the bottom, lots of fun!

My choice was 2013 KIA Soul, 6 speed manual. Lightweight 2800 lbs full of gas, very roomy inside true 5 passenger. Blue OX base plate, NSA Ready Brute Elite tow bar. Fun to drive hardly ever drive my other vehicles. Bought the car new 15K, out the door, taxes license, done.

Tow bar is 10K, under $1500 for complete set-up brakes, lights, break-away, base plate, all self installed (cables not in this picture).

Ditto what Palehorse said!

If all you want to do is ride the highways, then any towable will work. If you want to see parts of the country that are on the off roads, then you can't beat a Jeep. A two door Wrangler weighs in about 3700-4000lbs. An Ultimate (4dr) weighs in around 4300-4700lbs. They are extremely easy to tow and hold their value well.

BTW, Canyonlands and Arches are AWESOME!

I've towed a 2,900 lb '07 Saturn ION for over 60,000 miles with a RoadMaster Falcon All Terrain Tow Bar - 6,000 lbs
(And a '97 Saturn for over 70,000 miles before that with the same tow bar).

Really depends on what your needs are. 4WD a must if you want to hit the dirt and explore. Currently I tow a Nissan Xterra 4WD. If you want a little more versatility then a mid-size 4WD pickup fits the bill nicely. Chevy Colorado is flat towable from the factory or Toyota Tacoma with a driveshaft disconnect. If you're not going to hit the dirt then pre-2015 Honda CRV (our other toad) is a great toad. A lot goes into your decision. Off road, On road, will it be your daily driver when not travelling, etc.

I'm in the middle of the same "what to get?" TOAD struggle. The midlife crisis in me really wants a JK. The practical side of me says something like the Kia Soul would be very practical but that post above about getting off road, out west in the mountains/canyons really makes me think I should just get what I want rather than what I need. After all, isn't that what all this is about?

I hear you Tom, it will be used for primary and Toad duties for now. Jeeps are a bit pricey. CRV looks ok I didn't know , no 2015 or 16.

We love our GMC Canyon. It must be 4WD to tow four down. Our Blue Ox tow bar works great. Don't forget break assist. Break Buddy is very good.

4wd? Many CRVs, Equinox are Front wheel drive you mean 4 wheel drive?

I don't know where you are, but see if you have an auto dealer in your area that specializes in lease returns. There is one in the Fort Worth area that has a lot of Jeeps. I bought a less than 3 year old, under 35,000 miles and still in warranty Wrangler for less than what people were asking for 7-8 year old Jeeps with 150,000 miles on them.

Yes, Four Wheel Drive. The selector is held fully clockwise for ten seconds to disengage the transfer case. The battery also has to be disconnected. I use a Roadmaster battery disconnect.
