We have a 2000 Honda CRV and I made metat brackets inside the back on the rear door. They are clearly visible outside the vehicle. I guess the only downsides are attaching brackets to your interior and if you frequently travel down wet muddy roads.

That surprises me. We used them on our previous Escape for over three years and are now using them on our new Cherokee. They work great and not a mark at all You simply make sure you lift the up when taking them off. I have two sets (one for backup still unopened) and got them on a $10 Harbor Freight special.
My first today was a Colorado that had additional bulbs. Next toad was a Tahoe and I went to the BlueOX light bar that fit into the tow receiver on the Tahoe. Only reason I didn't use mag light on the Tahoe - they'd be higher than the legal limit for tail lights. No such problem with the Escape and the Cherokee. They are so convenient we'd never even consider additional bulbs or diodes.
