We've had the key on "accessory" on a 2007 Honda CRV, 2000 Jeep Wrangler, 2010 Jeep Wrangler, and 2010 Ford Edge as toads and no mileage accumulates.

If you still have the 2010 Wrangler it is not necessary to have the key in the accessory position since it does not have a locking steering wheel.

An 04 EXL ---it has A/T and "real time" 4 wheel drive---a bunch of other options-----it was the top on the line for that model year. I believe that all CR-V models are towable and for each year as well. It says so in their manual----but it deserves checking and asking if you are buying a used one.

The main reason the key is in accessary position is so the steering is not locked and your tow can track with the MH. My CR-V---nor did my Saturn before it accumulate mileage.

I have never heard that this makes the vehicle or the operator violate any laws---and I have been towing the thing for nine years.

I do keep a log of my toad tow miles however---for a completely different reason.

Some might call that evidence???? LOL (as my daughter would say in her e-mails)

Our 2009 CRV EX-L will not record miles when towed if you have the key in the "I" position but it WILL record miles if you have it in the "II" position. The owner's manual explains the proper procedure for towing a CRV. Can't speak for anything newer than 2009 but I think the 2010, at least, did not change this feature.

I wouldn't be surprised if some manufacturers are trying to do away with the zero miles while towing feature, though, since that would cause the new warranty to expire sooner and save them some money.

Many toads have fuses to pull which eliminates the mileage from increasing (under tow). The procedure is found in the owners handbook which leads me to believe it is NOT against the law. Doubt seriously that a large auto mfg. would (in writing) tell an owner how to break the law.

Toad mileage while being towed

We have a 2010 Honda CRV as our toad. We've towed it many a mile and not a single one of them registered on the odometer !

On my Saturn Vue I put it in accessory to unlock the steering wheel and if I pull for a long period of time I have to pull one fuze or the battery will go dead. This is a easy fix by wiring a fuzed switch in , that way you don't have to mess with the fuze box cover all the time.

Nothing illegal about odometer not indicating while being towed.

Law requires vehicle to have operable odometer and indicate all miles "driven". If odometer was defective and replaced statement must be made at sale that indicated mileage is not the true mileage.

Warranty, who knows and how would they know? Sounds suspect for a dealer even to suggest such a thing.

The mileage doesn't register on my 2010 jeep liberty.. and as far as I know its illegal to "turn back" the odometer but I have never personally heard anything on toad mileage specifically.... It only makes sense because on a manual transmission the mileage would not register right and when you tow 4 down you basically disengage the transmission (
on most) so in affect the only extra wear and tear is on the tires?????
