Mini-Cooper as a Toad?

Does anyone use a 5-speed manual shift Mini Cooper for their Toad?

If so, was anything special done with the transmission/electrical??

Have seen two Mini's being towed. Both were on tow dolly's. Not all FWD manual tranny vehicles can be towed 4 down. Have you googled it?

X 2 We also tow a Mini . Ours is a 2005 base model convertible. It is a 5 speed manual transmission. We have towed it for 2 years and many miles with no problems , if it wasn't for the rear cam you would not know it's even back there. We use a blue ox base plate and tow bar. Its equipped with the Air Force 1 proportional braking . Easy quick hookups .Click image for larger version

We have a 2016 Cooper S convertible with 6-sp manual, which I knew was not on the approved dinghy tow list for 2016 prior to purchasing it. However, the service manager at the dealership said it can be flat towed, and that if anything were to happen they would take care of me. When I asked him to put that in writing for me, he would not. There's the possibility that it would be okay, assuming the steering wheel won't lock after the 15-minute accessory timeout, but I wouldn't take that chance while the car is under warranty.

There are times when it would be nice to haul a small toad, but we'll stick to the F150 for now.

I have a buddy that tows one, he loves it. It think he's about to sell it actually... but only because he's downsizing, he loves the car.

We flat tow a 2015 Mini 4-Door Hardtop with the 6-speed manual. No special instructions and no problems. And we still get around 11mpg out of the 300hp Cummins. It makes a great toad!

We tow a 5-speed 2006 Mini Cooper with out problem. Put it in neutral and turn the ignition key to the first position and go. Use the ready brake system.

We tow a 2012 Mini Cooper with a manual transmission with no problems. Have almost 20k miles on it now, and never been an issue. Just put it in neutral, release the e brake, and off you go. No need for the key to be in the ignition, and the miles don't rack up on the odometer.

Ready to tow our Mini

Based on what I've read in this forum, we recently bought a 2012 6 speed manual Mini Cooper Hardtop and had a local body shop install the Blue Ox base plate and tail light 4 diode wiring kit.

To power the Patriot auxiliary brake unit, I installed an "always on" 12v power outlet since, with the ignition off, the factory outlets are not powered. I used a 10 amp fuse tap off of fuse #16, interior lights, since they are powered independently of the ignition.

The receiver on our Thor ACE is a bit too high so I am using a 6" drop receiver to bring the Blue Ox 6,500 lb tow bar to the level of the Base plate's attach points.

I am impressed and very pleased with the quality and finish of all the Blue Ox components as we get ready to head out on our first road trip with the Mini in tow.

2003 Cooper. Manual.
Flat tow is no issue at all. This was my track car and it has a battery shut off switch. Leave key turned on and shut off battery. I don't even use a braking system as the car only weighs about 2300.

Does anyone flat tow a Mini with the pushbutton start switch?

Other vehicles we've owned with pushbutton start would shut off if you're in the "accessory" mode (single push without foot on brake) after about 15 minutes if the engine isn't started. Since Minis don't appear to have a steering lock (at least, ours doesn't), I don't think this would be a problem unless you're powering a pod-type brake from a switched accessory plug.

This picture got my attention! Is this, your rig and Mini Cooper. The reason I ask is I thought it was mine. I have a 2007 Monaco Cayman same color as the picture and I tow a 2009 Mini Cooper JCW British racing green in color. What a coincidence! Mini is 6 speed manual and great toad and lots of fun.
