Mini Cooper S 2007- steering wheel lock ??

We towed a Mini Cooper 2007 "S" model four down without the key "Bob" in the slot. Previously had read on this site that the steering does not lock so therefore it was not necessary to have the key "Bob" in the slot while in tow. Upon leaving on our trip - the steering column was not locked so we thought all was "okay" -- but upon arrival to our destination the steering column was locked !!

Have others towing this vehicle -- year and model --found it necessary to have the key "Bob" in the slot so the steering column doesn't lock?

We are towing the same vehicle, (2008 convertible).

Key needs to be in ignition but does not need to be turned on. We turn the key on and make sure steering is unlocked, then turn the key off and do not remove it. So far, it works for our entire drive.

NOTE: We are new to towing the car and have not gone more than 75 miles away yet. It has not locked during travel but it is one of my concerns until I really get a chance to test it on an all day drive.

To clarify the Key in or key out situation.
2007 and older Mini's require the key to be in the slot to keep the steering unlocked (make sure it is unlocked to begin with)
2008 Convertibles are the same as 2007 and older Minis

2008 and newer Minis do not need the key in. It is my understanding that the steering does not lock.

Thank you Norm Mac - we are at our destination. When we hook it up for the trip home we'll try putting the "Key Bob" in the slot - to make sure the steering column is unlocked !
