MotorHome and Trailer Length Enforcement

I am curious how strict Length Laws are enforced in the case of Motor Homes and Travel Trailers? I realize most units do not approach the maximum length laws for most states but occasional I see some that close if not over the max.

Has anyone been measured or ticketed for Length Issues anywhere?

Thanks, rops

Those kinds of tickets normally occur after an accident where violations are noted ...and in addition to fines can cause insurance coverage problems for the violator...

Rops, we attended a seminar conducted by a NC State Trooper last year, he told several stories about pulling over and citing overlength RV's, even one "triple tow" (they are not allowed in NC). He mentioned most were Renegade and Dynamax rigs hauling big enclosed race car trailers. So this trooper, at least, did enforce the length limit.

On another forum with a high volume of traffic, I posted the same question. If I remember correctly, only one guy posted that he had been stopped - and that was for a triple tow.

Based on watching several forums for more than 6 years, I would classify any RV stop other than normal moving violations (speed, red light, etc) in a category I call HBL (hit by lightning). What I mean is that you have a better chance of lightning striking you while you are standing in your backyard than you have of being stopped for only an RV related matter. Most LEOs won't mess with RVs because there usually isn't any place to get them off the road safely. As a group, RV drivers don't make the hit parade on statistically bad situations. LEOs usually have bigger fish to fry.

If it is a slow day and city revenues are down, all bets are off.

We are actually about 3 feet over for our home province of Ontario. Our coach is 40' and the enclosed trailer is 24' plus the tongue. We have never been stopped, however, I have heard of other racers being ticketed at temorary road side inspection stations prior to entering race tracks. Other than that, I have not heard of anyone having a problem, however, we are illegal, and subject to fines, etc, if we get stopped.
