My wife gave me a Wrangler for Christmas!!! Help
WE have been towing her car on a dolly and I have wanted to get a jeep and tow 4 down for a while. We are leaving tomorrow for a week at the beach and thought I would put the jeep on the dolly since I do not yet have the equipment to tow 4 down, but after reading the owners manual, it states that the jeep must be towed either with all four wheels on the ground or all four off the ground. It says that it cannot be towed with two wheels off the ground, because it will damage the transmission. I had reasoned that with the transfer case in N, it would be ok to tow on a dolly. I guess that the transfer case in neutral disengages the wheels and drive shaft from the transmission but if the back wheels are spinning, it will spin the front drive shaft also? How will that damage the transmission though? Anybody have an answer? Remember when you were a kid and as soon as you opened presents on Christmas morning, your parents would make you leave all your stuff and go to your grandparents for the rest of the day? That's kinda what this will be like, only I'm gonna be gone a whole week!

Some transfer cases can be damaged with only one driveshaft turning, which is why it has to be 4 up or 4 down. My Yukon is the same.

I guess I could make her follow me in the jeep! Sounds like the perfect plan to me, I can see no reason that she wouldn't agree!!!

If it's standard transmission, it's a piece of cake to tow. There should be directions in your manual. It's been a 2 years since we towed one, but it's been the easiest so far!

Roger,
Congratulations on your new Wrangler! You will love it.
Do not tow your Wrangler 2 wheels up on a dolly. Flat 4 down only. Doesn't matter what kind of transmission you have.

It's an automatic. It's just wrong to put an auto in a jeep but its more common than the manual now days. Trip is in jeopardy as it stands now. We are in the middle of these thunderstorms so I haven't loaded anything, the weather man is telling me to expect 25 mph constant wind tomorrow with gust up to 60. Not fun in a rolling billboard. And to add insult to injury, DW thinks she has a kidney stone!

Hope the wife is OK?
Just a thought. I can understand wanting to take the new Jeep. Perhaps you can rent a car hauler/trailer from the local Uhaul outlet for a week? When you get back you can get the Jeep set up for proper flat towing.

Yep, the NP-231 or the NP-241OR (Rubicon) transfer case can not be towed on a dolly no matter what position you put the lever.
Autos are the wave of the future, look at any of the competition rock crawling buggies, you won't find a stick in any of them. As soon as I can scrape the parts together the 5 speed in my TJ is going in the trash and an AW-4 from a Cherokee is going in. Never wheeled an auto 'till I bought the Cherokee, they're several orders of magnitude better in the rocks.

If you diconnect the rear drive shaft from the rear axle and tire it up out of the way you can tow it as far as you want on a dolly.
