New to Toads and need advice...
We just completed our 1st 1200 miles with our 2001 Isuzu Rodeo in flat tow. After listening to our mechanic, we did not drop the drive shaft or take any other percautions. I'm quite sure we have roasted our transmission.
We are currently trying to find out what year/make/models make the best & easiest Toad. We need it to be a small to medium older SUV. We don't want to invest in the driveshaft coupling. Or spend any extra on gadgets if there are vehicles that are easily flat towed by shifting transmissions and transfer case into neutral.
We are Newbies to this and have learned a costly lesson...any advice would help.

OH NO ----- Sorry to hear this.
Don't believe what anyone says regarding its OK to tow. Get it from the source.
Look at the link that Gruelens supplied. I think there are a couple others who put out guides.

Look at Jeeps - Wranglers, Liberty, Grand Cherokee. A Liberty is a good small/medium SUV that was easily flat towed (with the right 4WD). We had a 2012 (last year made) that was a great toad.

So sorry to hear that.
Read the manual of the particular vehicle regarding towing as it is THE official guide to towing. The MH Dingy Towing Guidelines are just that .... Guidelines. Don't listen to anyone's word, read the manual.

Everyone will have a different opinion on what makes the best toad. I have a Jeep GC and it tows extremely well. The 4X4 function allows for more versatility. I do see a lot of Wranglers as toads. You have to ask yourself, how will you use it? That will tell you what you need.

X2 looking at Jeeps. I have a Jeep Wrangler and I think it is extremely easy to flat tow. And it's big enough to be functional, but small enough to easily fit into most campground sites. Sorry to hear about your transmission, and good luck with your search!

I think you should have read the owner's manual instead of listening to the mechanic, but I didn't need to tell you that, did I! 
Really sorry that this may cost you a lot of money. What's that they say about hindsight being 20/20! 
We just got a 2013 CRV AWD. It can be flat-towed by just going through a simple gearshift procedure. All the CRV's EXCEPT the 2015 can be flat-towed.

You should look at Subaru manual transmissions. We are and have had real good luck with ours.

We have a 2014 CR-V FWD. It can be flat-towed by just going through a simple gearshift procedure. I believe all the CR-V's EXCEPT the 2015 can be flat-towed but be sure to read the owner's manual instead of listening to anyone. Good luck in your search.

Hi chicaleana and Welcome to the Forum!
It would help if we knew what you were pulling the toad with and what the hitch & tow ratings are. If you are limited to 3500lbs then that is important since most SUVs are well over that. The Honda CRV and the older 4WD Jeep Cherokee (not Grand) are probably your best bet.
If you have a 5000 lbs rating or higher then you have more choices.
