New to towing toad

Going to be towing my VW Passat on a Kar Kaddy behind our Entegre 42rbq for the first time. Have towed a 41 ft fifth wheel behind a f350 4 door long bed without issue. Just want to know if there is anything I should be aware of or insights as to what not to do (other than backing up). Thanks.

Just make sure to stop after a short time and recheck the tightness of the straps. They tend to loosen after a short time as the car and straps settle in to place. Backing up a bit isn't impossible with a dolly.

Well, maybe 3' and then the toad goes one way, the dolly goes another, then they jackknife! Tried it once when the road ended in an almost, but not quite, large enough turn around. Had to unload, unhook and redo it to get out.

Take Bob advise and check your straps no need to look in the back up camera and see your vw going by itself down the road. Have not lost any toads but the first time towing a toad a trucker said pull over your going to lose your van and sure enough the straps were so lose the van could have come off. I have now sold the master tow and now have a kar kaddy. I have not used it yet but the dealership said that it need to be 18 inches off the road at the conection just an fyi

Careful loading the VW onto the dolly. Those front air dams hang low and can easily get damaged.

Hi Paul,
I know it's not spring yet, just wondering if your neighbor has made the towing lights for your Passat?

Thanks,
Chuck

Check wheel lug nut torques every day. I keep a torque wrench with my tools. Check the straps after a mile or two. Once they settle in they stay put, but I check them every time we stop. Keep the tire pressures up, both on the dolly and the car. Kar Kaddy's are good units.

Hi Chuck....
Not yet. I was at his dealership for service last week and he said he was still working on it. I will definitely post the picture when I receive it....
Paul.

Also new to towing. I'm looking at the cost associated with towing a toad vice renting a car at destination. Went to Alaska from NC in 2013 in a 2011 Pathfinder class A with 340 Cummins, averaged 10mpg, we rented cars. This summer I'm looking to tow a Wrangler JK up there. Anyone have a formula for the additional fuel cost?

Hi cgflyer,
Mr. Cummins will not know the car is back there. The only calculable mileage difference is getting up to speed. After than, the cost in fuel is very difficult to determine, because it is so small. The moral is get up to speed and stay there.

we tow a 2014 Passat wagon on a dolly. the only caution is loading when the ramps are wet. slow unloading but need a little speed(a little) or tires slip going up. if I did it again, I would have stuck with the standard tires instead of the low profine(only ones avail if you wanted a sunroof) we towed a chevy traverse before this and the Passat is much easier.
