Nissan Xterra

Looking for info on towing my Xterra 4WD automatic 4 wheels down . The owners manual says no, but that has been said about other vehicles also and I have seen them being towed. I have heard that with 4wd all yo need to do is put transfer case in neutral and automatic in park and it works, I am looking for anyone ot there that has done this with te xterra and that it has worked for them.

My thinking about this is old school since we used to be able tow anything as long as it was a manual tranny, 4x4 with a neutral, or disconnect the driveshaft if it was auto.
