No toad for a 12 day 1200 mile tour

Hi,

I have had numerous toad posts this week but wanted to start a new one on this.

We have a 12 day 1200 mile trip planned.

The first and last day we would drive 250 miles, the other 700 miles would be driven over the rest of the time staying 2 to 3 nights in State Parks or boondocking.

We would do any tourist things on our travel days and then hike/kayak the other days. Would also pick up groveries on travel days.

I think this is doable without a toad, what do folk think?

Thanks,

Stephen

This really all depends on you. If you’ve got plenty of things to do within walking distance of your campsite or you’re happy with sitting around the campsite you should be fine but if you’re the type that want to venture off (several miles) outside of your campsite and explore you’re probably gonna want a toad. Since you don’t yet have a toad give it a try and you’ll know for future reference.

I think it is easily "doable". I also think that after this trip you will have valuable experience. You will then be able to decide whether or not a Toad is needed for YOU.

Good luck.

Thanks both for the replies,

When we go to State Parks for 3 nights we don't bring a toad and are happy with that, for our week long state park trips my wife follows me in our 4 runner (it's normally a 2 hour drive).

There are two drawbacks to using your coach as the sole vehicle:

1) Sometimes it's difficult or impossible to find adequate parking, and
2) It lengthens your travel days

The kind of traveling you describe can be done without a toad. You're basically "island-hopping" every few days.

A toad comes in handy when you want to park the coach for a longer period, using it as a base of operations. That's what you are doing with the 4Runner. Travel further from home, and/or stay longer in a spot, and a second vehicle becomes more important to have- for most.

Due to a death in the near family I recently made a trip to CA. Only 700 miles one way and there were vehicles available there. But I still took the CR-V just in case of a breakdown. Ended up only driving some 38 miles but I still had it if the need arose.

We have 5 vehicles and none of them can be used as a toad. I haven't decided which one I will get rid of to get a towable vehicle. I love them all. lol Ive also seen mentioned the opt of converting the drivetrain on one of the trucks but haven't done the numbers.

So....we have been taking advantage of Lyft or Uber. Depending on which one I happen to have a discount for. Usually we go to state parks less than an hour away and I just drive behind. When we get a lyft we go into town or wherever we can take advantage of public transportation. Not glamorous..but we aren't proud. haha

Hi,

We are like that with our car and Suv.

I spoke to a buddy who works at a car dealer and he said just get a 10 year old Toyota Corolla for about 3,000$

We recently parked next to a 45' Class A in Newport, Or. The owner told me he has traveled all over the northwest and relies on Uber for getting around the local areas. Personally, I am like Mr. D. I like having a vehicle in case of a break down.

I can understand folk wanting the security of having a toad in the event of a breakdown.

Wouldn't go without a toad....

even when we had a very small 1985 winnebago leSharo with a 4 cyl turbo diesel,
we towed a Jeep CJ5 behind it

It opens up all kinds of neat trails, etc... once there
