Novice question...I feel stupid.

Although I've toad before, I've always been fortunate enough to have a 4x4 for tow. So here's my question - If towing something with rear drive (either 2x4 or 4x4) and using a dolly for the front, does the rear drive shaft have to be disabled? ...dah....

Yes/No/Maybe

When you find out what it is. Year/Model/transmission/stick/auto/2x4/4x4 etc.

Check the Application Chart on the left

If a two wheel drive, rear drive, yes, you'll need to disconnect the driveshaft (companies such as Remco sell a product to do this without having to crawl under it each time to disconnect or reconnect). If it's a 4X4, depends. If you have a transfer case, with a nuetral position, you can probably tow it (but I'd flat tow, if that were the case, and ditch the dolly). If it's an 'all wheel drive', you'd better check with the manufacturer.

A lot depends on the transmission, but the answer, is "Sometimes" Using a dolly under the front wheels on a rear wheel drive is the same as 4-down towing it, Remco towing (Linke in someone else's post above) is the expert here.

If you are going to tow a RWD, I'd recommend doing it 4 down.

I'm not above dropping a drive shaft if I have to.

Looks like it can be towed with the lube pump. Funny thing is that my 4x4 Sportrac doesn't show any application at all on Remco. ....just shows 2wd Sportrac. Oh well.
