Amen Dirk. Useless feature w/a Diesel tailpipe out the back. I haven't once turned mine up in this coach, don't even know if it works.

Actually I've seen Dirk hook up his toad. His process works great! Not to mention the black marks on the tarmac, or the wrinkles in his towbar, or the fact that his awning fell off, or.....

I back the toad up until both bars lock. If they do not lock my wife stays out and watches the hitch while I pull up the coach.

I recently had a phone conversation with a representative of Blue Ox. As one who generally prefers to lightly back up the toad to engage the tow bar arms, I was going over a question about one of the small lock handles.

The representative emphatically insisted that the coach should be forwardly engaged, not backing the tow. I asked for a more through explanation, but she could not give me one.

Ten to one I am still going to back up the car to engage the lock arms, not vice versa.

I just slowly go forward until I feel the tug..roll a few feet then hit the brakes to see if the car stops properly in my camera...then go! My lock arms lock very easily and I trust them that they are locked within a few feet of forward motion..no reason not to..

Guess I am lucky as I have a Ford Focus for a toad --- very light. If I am on level ground, I will push the Focus backward until one of the arms locks. If not level, then I will pull forward until one locks and then have the wife turn the wheel toward the unlocked arm and pull forward a little more -- usually will lock up both in about 15 to 20 foot.

I too pull forward 5 to 10 feet and tap the brakes to insure that the bars locked; looking in the rear camera monitor to see that the toad stayed centered. Before pulling forward, I have already checked lights and double checked parking brake, transmission position, steering wheel is unlocked and connections look good between vehicles.

I don't think the tow bar knows whether the coach is moving forward or the toad is moving backwards.

The rep's reply sounds like the rep was reading the script that most companies provide their reps.

I usually give the toad a push back with my foot, more to make sure it is rolling freely than to lock the arms. I lock the arms by pulling the coach forward slowly.

I've never had cause to worry about the arms extending and locks engaging, but I suppose anything could happen. I worry a lot more about forgetting to set up the car properly and burning up a transmission or scuffing a tire.

I drive forward slowly and I can hear the tow bar lock with the back-up camera on and the volume turned up.

I stop 10 to 20 feet forward and get out and check it.

On the seldom occasion when one arm does not lock, I drive the MH forward while DH watches the arm lock. One of our steps when hooking up the toad, is to NOT go from reverse to neutral, always from drive to neutral, so I would not want to start a process of backing up the toad. My biggest worry is not engaging the toad gears properly while hitching, so we always check each other. Pulling the MH forward a few feet always has resolved the unlocked arm.
