Pickup Toads
Am trying to decide which small pickup to buy for towing. I want extended cab for hauling and have narrowed down to Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon or Dodge Dakota. Any suggestions? Thanks

The Colorado and the Canyon are the same truck with a different name plate. We pulled a Colorado for almost 5 years. We did put helper springs on the back because we loaded it so heavy. That's the reason we went to the Silverado.... yep, with helpers. Just a slow learner, I guess.

Ford is coming out with a new Ranger later this year, maybe wait and check it out. Just unveiled yesterday at the big Detroit Auto Show.

Choose what brand you like, but it needs to be a 4x4 for flat towing. None of them is towable without 4-wheel drive.

I flat tow our 2wd Ranger Sport, factory says OK, max speed is suggested 55, but I sneak up to 60 occasionally. 
It's a 5 speed manual, just put in neutral and go.

I flat tow a 2017 RWD F150, that had a drive shaft disconnect added.

Dakotaboy...Dakota for us. 2003, bought used, 4door v8, has 165K on the clock and 100K towing. Perfect toad!!

One of our toads is a 2005 4x4 Canyon (same as Colorado). Transfer case in neutral, Transmission in Park, yes I said PARK.  No speed restriction, no time limit, just go. We also added helper springs to the rear end. Gas mileage sucks for a small truck. We have the 5 cylinder, and get 15 around town and maybe 20 on the highway  . A small truck like that should get much better, but that's about right for other owners I've run into. If the Dakota gets better mileage and you find one you like, I'd probably go with that if starting fresh. Other than fuel economy, we like our Canyon. Good luck with whatever you choose!

We currently tow a Dakota...having the bed has been super handy for camping! We're in the process of switching to a different toad to reduce the number of cars we have (and our Dakota is for sale in the classifieds here if you're looking for a used one!), but I'm going to miss having a truck on our trips.
