Problem with Toad
1-4-19 Hi, I hope you can find the right people to ask about this because it is an:
Automotive mystery I bought a 2000 Chevy Cavalier Z24 (2.4L 100k miles) Ran it for several months and many miles and it ran fine. One day returning from the VA in Orlando on I-4 (150 mile RT) it over heated (#1 steam from under hood) I worried that it was a head gasket so I put Barr stop leak in it. It ran fine for months and suddenly it overheated with steam (#2) so I had a thermostat put in it. It ran fine again for weeks including the hi-way trip to the VA. Then one morning I left my apartment with a cold engine (50s) and drove less than 3 miles, I watched the temp gage as it started moving up (a little faster than normal) it went right past the normal temp and rapidly moved higher, steam from under the hood again (#3). I pulled over, shut the motor off, let it cool for several mins, and when I restarted it the temp gage returned to normal. Today I watched it carefully and it never got above normal.
What could it be ??????????
I have had people say that the new Slant thermo could be bad, check the fan, needs a rad flush, bad water pump, and clogged cat converter.
However it has only happened 3 times in a year and thousands of miles. The last time the engine was stone cold and did it within three miles.
This car runs and handles great so I would like to keep it.

How often do you check the coolant level in the radiator? Not the burp tank but the radiator?
Proper function is as coolant warms/expands, it is forced into the tank. Then when you shut it off cools and the vacuum pulls coolant back in the radiator. If you have a small leak you don't have that vacuum, tank can stay full and you run low on coolant...

Start cold engine, no fan, turn on AC fan starts, AC off fan stops. Engine up to operating temp no fan. I got it up to full temp and let it idle for some time temp stayed in normal range and no fan.

No Radiator cap on this model, only expansion tank cap.

You can buy a thermostat that will do this. It has a little pill that hangs from hole to keep it closed so car will warm up faster.hole opens up under pressure

GEO it sounds like the engine fan thermostat is bad.

Squeeze along the length of the lower radiator hose. If the internal spring is partially rotted and gone, the water pump could suck the lower hose flat, cutting off water from the radiator.

Thanks Tony, I went out, got down, and the bottom hose is very soft. That could explain why it could go for weeks and then happen, then go for many weeks and happen again. I will change it.

Old shade tree mechanic trick, drilling a couple holes in the thermostat to let bubbles out when you're filling it up after cooling system work.

I think I'd replace both hoses and thermostat plus flush the system twice.
If the original belts are still on it they'd get replaced too.
Better now than when you are on a trip.

I think you should take it to a licenced mechanic instead of trying everything possible based on suggestions from people on a MH web site.
