Question for GM gearheads.

Does anyone know why Chevy Equinox & GMC Terrain's can be flat towed with FWD Automatics, but other GM FWDs can't? Since the 1980s I've never Known GM to make any more transmission types than absolutely necessary. So why would a 4000 lb. FWD CSUV have a different transmission than a 4000 lb FWD sedan?

I'm surprised that someone knowledgeable in this hasn't spoken up yet. I always wonder when I see someone use the term FWD, if they mean 4 wheel drive or front wheel drive. As far as I know GMC's four wheel drive (4wd) and all wheel drive (awd) vehicles are flat towable, but check the owner's manual to be sure. Basically if all the wheels can be powered it can to flat towed. But if it's front wheel drive, it must be on a dolly with the front wheels off the pavement or trailered with all the wheels off the pavement. The difference is the transmission, and from what little I understand about it the front wheel drive vehicles tend to pump the oil out of the transmission while pulling it down the road thus damaging the tranny and even catching on fire at times. Hopefully others will speak up that have a better understanding of the reasons and differences. I go by what the owner's manual says.

Easy Rider, I understand the 4x4 xfer case reasoning. It's just that the Acadia, Terrain & sister ships can be towed 4 down front wheel drive & all wheel drive. I just can't figure out why none of the other GM front wheel drives would have the same transmission.

For 2014 the Malibu has been put back on the list. The Traverse, Spark and Sonic can be towed.
You may want to look at the owners manual for GM vehicles. Here is a link to them.
Towing info is usually found under Vehicle Care.

think its just a higher level of flued in the transmission so that you dont need a pump

i have seen ppl that need a E/tow just over fell the transmission so it can be towed longer/ more miles

truth be told i really dont know and is some thing i would like to know
