Do a search for ReadyBrake or ready brake along with hhr and there are quite a few posts including some of mine.
Here is a picture of the front of my HHR. I have a Roadmaster base plate.
The center cable is for the brake and the right cable is the emergency stop. I have since shortened the brake cable to just sticking out a half inch because it was rubbing on my hitch. I used the right bolt hole of the 4-way lighting socket as the terminal of the brake cable outer sleeve.
And here is how I connected the cables and the brake light indicator wires.
The left cable is the emergency stop cable and the right one is the braking cable. I ran the dash indicator light wires (orange arrows) from the front through the firewall and connected-black to a car ground and red to a light blue wire on the brake light switch. Test for which wire comes on when pedal is pushed. I ran the brake cable outer sleeve from the baseplate in front of the radiator along the cross channel and then along the driver's side frame rail and up to the firewall hole. Avoid real sharp curves and you will be OK. I ran the emergency stop cable from behind the headlight straight over the transmission and to the firewall. It's not pretty, but also not in the way of anything and hopefully is never used.
My setup has worked flawlessly for 5 years now. The only mod I did was to add a 1/4" turnbuckle in line on the cable from the hitch pull bar to the loop coming out of the car. That makes it real easy to make minute adjustments to the cable tension, which is the critical part of the whole operation.
