I wanted a medium sized 4-wheel drive vehicle where the transfer case could be put into "neutral" manually and could towed 4-down. Now some can be put into "neutral" electronically. I chose a Jeep Cherokee, 1996, and never looked back.

While there are a lot of good ones out there, I would select a Jeep product, probably a Grand Cherokee, this go-around.

I'm towing an 06 4-door Dakota V-6, 6-speed std with a fbrglass topper.
It gets 23mpg hwy,... got room for 5 adults, and I can haul a pair of 50 gallon water tanks. (We like to dry camp out in the desert during winter & need to refill the coach every few days). Also,...the extra hauling room in the cab & bed comes in handy for camping gear, bicycles, etc when we're in route.

When we started out full timing, I was doing service work and needed to tow a service truck. After going to work for dealerships I wanted to get the wife back to work and wanted a good dependable vehicle for her. A friend of ours (buys vehicles and equipment for city) researched and bought a Vue so when the time came we bought one too! Both are set up to tow and depending on where we are going and what we will be doing one or the other is towed and if need be Vue is driven also.

2003 Honda CRV:good weight,autotrans, AWD,easy 4 down tow procedure,tow miles don't accumulate on the odometer,full size spare,folding rear seats, built in/removeable picnic table, seats 5, big man friendly (6ft3in,250 lbs), oh ya, and the color matched our rig. Pre 2003 were smaller and the recent models have some redesign which I haven't checked out.

I bought the jeep and suzuki for ease of towing.Jeep is a blast to drive in the summer, The Suzuki holds my whole family when we are all together.

2007 Honda CRV. Nice comfortable car, AWD, doesn't record miles when towed, easy to hook up and tow. Good mileage. Great car.

We tow a Saturn Vue, 6 cyl, AWD. The Vue met our needs, which were as follows:
1. Must be towable 4 wheels down without modification
2. Must be under 4000 lb
3. Must get over 20 mpg (EPA estimate)
4. Must have room to carry wife's mobility scooter
5. Must have 4 doors

Beyond that, the Vue met most of our "wants" (leather interior, AWD, 6 cyl. engine, side air bags, etc.).

Towed a 2000 Wrangler for many of the reasons above, mostly for towing 4 down. Traded to the '05 Liberty Limited to keep the Jeep benefits and get a more "civilized" ride when being used everyday.

We have and really like our Sunfire a light weight car about 2700# and it works very well as a "toad" and tows four wheels down very well behind our motorhome. Our Sunfire has the 2.2 L engine and is very responsive and is a peppy little car.

The reason we are trading is that Pat really-really likes the Chevy HHR ever since the first time she saw it in 2006, so we are ordering a new 2008 HHR.

We ordered 2008 LT 1LT Touring suspension, with the standard 2.2 L engine, Sandstone Metallic, Cashmere Leather Seating Surfaces, Running boards, and the 4-speed automatic Transmission.

The HHR only weighs about 200# more.

The 2005 Sunfire we are selling or trading in if it does not sell first.

03 Honda Element 2wd

Tows 4 down with a minimum of preparation

I was able to add the Blue Ox baseplates myself

Huge amount of cargo space when rear seats are removed or hung on the sides gives us room for transportation of wife's mobility scooter.

Pretty good gas milage, but a lot of pep when accelerating or cruising.

Price was right.

Certified Honda Pre-owned gave me 100k mile warranty

We had a Saturn SW2 Wagon. Towed like a dream. No fuses to pull, etc., so setup was quick.

The thing we didn't like was climbing in and out of the car, and 'sitting on the ground'.

So our new toad is a Chevy HHR 2LT. It's a wagon with seats which fold flat with lots of room for our 2 Golden Retrievers, and the front seats sit up high in the car, so getting in and out is easy. Tows 4-down.

I installed a fuse-switch for the 1 fuse (fuse #8) which needs to be pulled while towing.

Weighs about 3000 lbs. We love it.
