Does anyone have any experience with the Remco drive shaft coupling that allows for towing an automatic transmission vehicle. I want to add this to my Dodge pickup truck. Anything good or bad ?

I have had one on a 93 Toyota pickup for about 14 years.I built the driveline myself and installed it.It does have to be lubricated and adjusted for easy shifting.It has worked very well foe me.I am ready to replace it,just not sure of the replacement.

Been using one on a 1993 Eplorer Sport, so starting on its 20th year with no problems. Keep it clean and dry lubed including the cable and they work very well.

I have two friends that had them, both of them had to have their trans rebuilt after using the disconnect.
Another had the pump, it failed with no alarm sounding and so that was another trans gone.

I had the Disconnect installed 8500 miles ago.

Works as advertised. It's important to follow directions when you begin towing.

Mine is on a 2006 Dodge Dakota. Really tows well.

I have read of a few failures,, Some of those were due to improper installation.. Some lack of proper maintenance, but given the large number of them sold to members of the assorted forums I visit, I'd say the number of failures I have read about is small.

The biggest complaint (this is a maintenance issue) is the control cable, If you do not exercise and/or lube it it gets rusted and jams up and won't work.. Other like cables are shifter cables on multi-speed bicycles (I replace mine every frew years) throttle cables on lawn mowers and the like and even remote cable handles on dump valves.

If you don't work them a bit from time to time, and lube on occasion, they get rusty and do not work.

They have been around a long time. The only thing that has changed is the sale of the rights to the disconnect to Superflow in Des Moines. They manufacture driveshaft balancing equipment and really know what they are doing. The problem is they buy the components from an assortment of outside vendors, some of whom may or may not have performed the same service for Remco. One problem in the past has been improper attachment of the coupling to the driveshaft, as well as a failure to properly balance the new assembly. Superflow seems reluctanct to ship just the coupling/slider and basket to customers, who will then be relied on to modify their existing driveshaft or provide a new one. Southwest Driveline appears to be one of the few shops capable of doing this correctly.

I have told a horror story about struggling to get one installed on my 2003 GMC Yukon last year...but finally a new driveshaft with the coupling attached arrived directly from Superflow got installed at a Camping World dealer and adjusted correctly at another Camping World dealer, after quite a struggle, extra days in a KOA and numerous phone calls to Superflow. All is well and and I am now quite happy with it. Works fine and should last a long time. Much better than relying on a lube pump.

My advice: Contact Bill at Superflow (Disconnect Division) and ask for the most experienced dealer/installer that is convenient to you. Buy the disconnect/driveshaft COMBINED WITH installation/adjustment from that dealer. Do not try to do it yourself or go to somebody inexperienced. You could be sorry and probably will.
