Scooter Carrier

Help need ideas.
I have seen large cycles mounted sideways on the back while still towing a vehicle. I have a 350 lb scooter that I want to do the same. I do not want or need a $3-5k lift. If I just hook a rail up on the back (welded to the frame of course) how will I get it up there without killing myself? after we solve this problem, then we will tackle adding the Kayaks as well.

scooter hitch

I used a receiver hitch mounted carrier to carry our scooter '08 Schwinn 150cc scooter from Tucson to Florida and back - no issues other than loading it onto the carrier - took two of us - the loading ramp is too short to do any good - scooter bottomed out before going up onto the carrier and had to be lifted. Well, as far as getting up there, you really have no choice other than to push it up, or motor it up gently, but 350lbs is getting to the max of being able to do that. I've used those type carriers for my DR650 which is just shy of 350lbs and it was a bit of a handful, but doable. My scooter that I used was much lighter and of no consequence. Depending on your physical ability, will determine whether you will be able to do this. You must have one of the larger cc type scooters.

You might be able to "motor" it up, but that takes very precise control of the throttle, and depending on how tall you are, and how tall the carrier is you might want to consider a step stool to transition up onto once the bike gets up on the carrier. A second person is ALWAYS a good idea, even if you have to recruit someone.

Good Luck

I am thinking of a winch system. either for the scooter or drive the scooter on at ground level and winch it up. Need you to think out of the box!

It is 89.2" long and 29.3" wide. 250cc's of pure joy.

VersaHaul makes a receiver mounted scooter carrier that loads by a detachable ramp and has a Class III receiver on the rear of it, but your toad would have to be really light. When using the VersaHaul I think you're limited to 3k lbs towing capacity. It is by far the best receiver mounted scooter carrier I've used.

Here's a link to the one I built to haul my dirt bike and pull the toad. It's very stout and have no reservations hauling a 4K toad with it.

Just a follow up. If you use a "Joe Hauler" type carrier you can walk the bike up the ramp using the bikes motor. I do it all the time with the KTM. If the scooter has an auto-clutch it should be even easier.
