Setting up a Cmax as a TOAD

Blue Ox or Roadmaster base plate?

Considering SMI AFO as a braking system but don't like the LED notification system. Has anyone put an indicator in the dash area and wired it from the TOAD?

Recommended Tow Bar brand and model?

Lights connected to Cmax lights using diodes or separate sockets and bulbs?

Charge line direct from motorhome using breakers ok or do I need a charger like toad charge?

Anything else I need to consider?

Any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated!

I'm using charge line direct from MH, breakers at MH And at toad. Don't try to do without charge line. Battery dies in 2-3 hours. I used Roadmaster baseplate, so far, after two years no problems.

Download latest owner's manual. Procedure for preparing to tow has changed 3 times in 2 years. First one was copied from Focus manual and totally wrong.

Setting up a Cmax as a TOAD

We are towing a 2015 C-Max Energi with a Blue Ox baseplate and Aventa tow bar and Air Force One braking system. We did set up a charge line. Have had no issues with the battery. The Air Force One system piston does attach somewhat close to your foot/toes on the brake shaft, but we have not found this to be an issue. Additionally we made a plastic "shield" to prevent the Air Force One cable from catching on the knuckle of the steering column.

Towing a 2014 Fusion Hybrid using Blue Ox baseplate and Invisibrake supplemental brake system. Invisibrake system lights an LED on coach dash when brake actuates. Absolutely need a charge line. Mine is fused on both ends and uses a diode on the toad end to prevent discharge of toad battery to coach. Just finished 9,000 mile trip and it worked well.

We bought a 2013 C-Max SEL. We went to Blue Ox factory where they used our C as the first baseplate fabricated for a CMax. Because it was a hybrid we didn't want diodes, and Blue Ox installed separate lights/wiring to tail lights. We used Blue Ox Aventa LX tow bar, and Blue Ox Patriot Brake. (At the time we had a Class C with a 3500 lb hitch rating, so CMax fit within that limit, and we loved the cargo space in Hatchback CMax.). We were happy with all the Blue Ox equipment except the Patriot seemed to tip over a lot, then applied brake extended time thus "we had alarms on the wireless receiver" inside the Class C; and we discontinued use of the Patriot.

However, we spent the next 14 months trying to hope Ford would identify and find a permanent fix for the parasitic battery drain that was common in that model year (?don't know if it has been solved later years? But do know from experience ...dead battery issues had nothing to do with towing ... Only 1 time when towing behind MH of 6 times in first year dead battery, four times wrecker back to dealer from our house and our town.)

For us, even the better mpg on CMax with all the inherent battery issues was not worth the lack of a reliable vehicle. Just surprised Ford never was able to overcome that issue. Good lookong car, but ....

When we moved to a DP with 10K hitch rating...we traded the CMax in on a new Jeep GC, added SMI AFOne, and we once again have a vehicle that tows great and is very reliable.
