SMI in Mini Cooper

Has anyone installed an SMI Stay-IN-Play Duo in a Mini Cooper? If so, where did you install the operating unit in the crowded area under the hood?

They have great customer support. Here's a link to contact them for instructions.

Thanks, but these are just general instructions. Doesn't tell me where to install the unit in my crowded mini.

Toad: 2006 Mini Cooper S Convertible
Baseplate: Roadmaster EZ Brackets
Towbar: Roadmaster Stowaway 5000

Please let us know what you discovered, the Mini Cooper is on our short list of towed vehicles, and the SMI our first choice in auxiliary braking.

mini cooper is just too "mini", does it really make a difference with or without an aux brake?

FYI - My 2006 Mini is listed at 2700 pounds curb weight and 3700 Gross so many states require brakes. My CRV is listed at 3430 curb only about 700 pounds difference.

In Nevada you must have auxiliary braking for anything over 1500#.

I faced the same "mini" space problem when I was looking at an SMI system to use in my Honda Fit. What I did instead is get the RVi braking system. It is easy to setup and works great.

And regardless of what your state rules are, any responsible owner will add brakes (and breakaway capabilities) to his toad.

Thanks for the info and I agree with you: always, always - safety first!!

So an update: SMI has confirmed that the unit can be installed in a Mini. Soon as I get it installed, will let you know the details.
