Steering Wheel Question on Toad
Ok we just bought a 2003 4x4 Jeep Liberty with Automatic. We are also getting a Excali Bar II towbar and Blue Ox base plate.. My question is from what I am reading on other posts you do not lock the steering wheel??
The steering on the toad just free floats??

the front wheels must turn
When you tow 4 down the front wheels must beable to turn or the whole front end will skid sideways and wear off your tires.

The wheel must be in the unlocked position so the car can track as the RV turns. You'll have to determine if the wheel can remain unlocked with the key in the ignition, whether it has to be turned all the way on; in the accessory position; or just leave the key in the ignition after unlocking to have the wheel remain unlocked. If it has to be left on, you might have issues with the battery draining.

I have done this in emergency situations and had my navigator sit in the car and hold the steering wheel. If it decides to turn, you will have Major Trouble. Other than that, let er rip. It will follow you where ever you go.

Thank you all It just seems like the front wheels would do what ever they feel like but you all have way more experience.. We just decided this year that we are missing a lot of sites if all we can do is walk to them..We are anixous to try the Toad this year..

Your wheels will track to the path of least resistance. Castor, or a slight tilt in geometry of your steering means the wheels will track. Sort of like the wheels of a shopping cart.

Oh for sure your steering wheel has to be able to turn with the turning of the coach. Unless of course you are going to be driving in a straight line everywhere

And to relieve your mind just tie a white cloth to the top of the steering wheel. Then watch your toad (safely) in the rear camera. You can see the wheel turning as it should. Before long you can forget about it - almost.

As long as you can see it in the camera, everything is OK. If you see your toad in the mirror, you have a problem.
That's another story.

In all seriousness Once I hook up the toad, my DH drives and turns the coach so the tow bar arms lock and I watch the steering wheel to be sure it's turning too. Then we are off

Toad steering lock
Our last toad had a mechanical steering wheel lock, if the key was left in the igntion it held the lock 'off'. Didn't like leaving the key in & the vehicle unlocked, so 'altered' the Locking mechanism!! Our new toad, '13 Focus, has push button start, electrical steering wheel lock! I can't find any information what-so-ever on how to 'override' this system. Any information would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
