Hi am considering purchasing a Subaru Outback or Forester with MT as a TOAD, would appreciate any feedback on this choice. My primary criteria is something I can tow four down, no additional modifications (tranny lube pump or drive shaft disconnect) and I'd like to avoid GM or Chrysler products.

Thanks

Pat

We have a 2007 Forester and it works great. I fitted the Blue Ox baseplate myself which wasn't too big a job. I also use the EvenBrake unit so I didn't have to modify the brake system.

I tow a 00 Outback with a 5sp trany. It tows fine, no complaints. We have run the battery down a few times usualy towing at nite. The car tracks nice and rides good behind the RV. No special needs to tow flat 4.

Just a question- Skier : Why did the battery run down? My toad lights are powered by the m/h voltage; the same as a boat trailer would be from the tow vehicle. Not a problem - just wondering.

Hey John, Do you have a auto tranny or manual??

IE: Is a manual tranny necessary

You can't tow the automatic you have to have a manual.

Does your Forester add miles to the odometer when being towed? I have
a new Subaru I have been setting up as a Toad and hate the idea of using up my warranty towing it.

No. Like all modern cars the odometer is electronic and only registers when the engine is running.

I'd love to get a Forester but don't want to drive a manual transmission. You can't pull any of the Subaru's four down with auto transmissions.

Well I purchased an Outback with manual transmission, tows great and no worries about periodically starting it up to run fluid through the transmission. Besides it's a fun car to drive.
