TOAD
This is my first time,I have followed n2rv for a more than a year and have always appreciated the vast insite to finding answers to problems.
Mine is I am not able to find a internate page or a magazine that a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 is towable with all 4 on the ground with no modifactions in the drive line.
If anyone has had the experance with the veh I'd like to get as much info before I purchase one
Thanks
Fred

Welcome Fred. Can't answer definitely for that make and model as I tow an '06 Liberty.
But, if the Grand Cherokee has a manual transfer case lever to switch from 2WD into 4WD Hi/Lo, then its a pretty safe bet that towing 4 down will be fine.
Can you or the current owner look at the owner's manual to check what it says?

The answer, according to Remco Application Charts | Remco Towing is, it depends. Look at their site, and plug in your 97 Grand Cherokee. It says that some models can be towed as is, (4x4/AWD), some need a lube pump, (RWD automatic), and the 5 speed manual RWD they hedge their bet by saying that they know of no problem, but will sell you a driveshaft disconnect if you think you need it.
It says in your post that you have 4x4 so you should be fine as is. Check out Remco though for your own piece of mind and to make sure I didn't make a mistake. (wife said it happened once, but I don't remember it.....)

We had a '97 Jeep GC with full time 4WD. Towed it many miles with no trouble. As stated above, you need to know which 4WD option it has. Ours was the Quadra Trac and worked fine.

The easiest to tow are the 4 wheel drive versions, especially the transfer cases with a neutral position. The Grand Cherokee's are the quirkiest to determine if they could be towed 4 down, there were several different types of transfer cases and not all of them were towable.
Jeep Grand Cherokee 1993-1998 is a ZJ
Manual or Automatic Transmission?
Which transfer case does it have?
Is the transfer case shifter electronic or manual?
Is there a neutral position on the transfer case?
The ultimate answer: Look in the Owners Manual for the specific model you are buying. Not only will it tell you if it is towable 2 or 4 down, but how to set it up. Make sure it is the owners manual for that specific model.

ALVINC
Thanks good info!
This has a V8 and I'll be looking for the "manual transfer case" and mainly the owners manual.
Thanks so much
Fred
