There are many different types. Some are in line and part of your tow bar system. We have a "box" type from Blue Ox called the Patriot. It is very similar to the Brake Buddy Deluxe.
It is a simple system. You put the Brake (box) device inside your vehicle. Connect the 12 volt cord, the break away cord, clip a braking clamp from the box to your car brake and it works via your cable that connect from auto to RV. Then there is a sensor that goes to the RV that "communicates" what your brake settings are or any errors that may occur. These type of systems run around $1000. The advantage of this type of system is it is tranferable easily into another vehicle without mods. The disadvantage is you have to take it in and out of the vehicle when you disconnect to use vehicle. But for us, it takes a total of 6 min to set up and about 4 minutes to take out and store.
Check the Towing Forum lots of good info there depends on type of coach you own-air brakes or hydraulic. IMHO the brake buddy or patriot claims of " proportional " braking are very questionable
