Toad-charge

I recently installed a tow plate on my Mini Cooper S (manual) to pull behind my Sprinter Based ERA class B. We've been towing various vehicles 4 down behind our class A's (3 DP'ers) since 1995. I decided it was time to put toad brakes into the system and chose the Blue Ox Patriot on the floor system. The Blue Ox does use the battery in the Mini for it's power.
I purchased the TOAD-CHARGE kit for just under a $100 online. This kit has absolutely everything you will need to install it and is very well engineered and user friendly. It took about an hour to install into the ERA and the Mini and is totally independent of the Mini and/or ERA wiring. It works great, only draws from the ERA battery when it's running, and regulates the charging of the Mini battery to eliminate overcharging. The system can be moved from toad to toad and/or motorhome with just a little of effort and time.
I HIGHLY recommend this product. And it's great to know that the mini WILL start every time I unhook it when we reach our destination.

I agree, the connectors look less than "hardy". However, pretty easy to upgrade to a higher quality connector should i need to change them.

I just wired my Toad Charge into my MH 7 way plug and the Fit's 6 way plug. Those should be plenty weather proof.

I would like to see that as well. When wiring toad I put in place a wire for that purpose but have not run it yet as being unsure.

I ran a separate wire from the 7 pin connector to the battery. I added a fuse and an on/on switch at the battery. Also at the battery I added a short wire with a connection/plug. So when I hook up I plug into the seven pin connector at the back of the RV. The other end plugs into a connector at the front of the tow car near the battery with the new added wire going to the tow car battery. I do have to open the hood each time I connect or disconnect but that isn't much of a problem. This is on my CRV but will do the same for the next time I tow the Cooper.

I bought the Toad Charge and liked the product, but the connectors between the vehicles and even the ones that plug into the two units are cheesy and weak. I used the ones that plug into the two boxes, but placed a wire mount hold down so that they wouldn't disconnect. I replaced the ends that connect the vehicles together with something like these Molded Connectors | WiringProducts.com I found a similar connector, but one side of the connector had a large ring around the plug with four holes so that it could be mounted to a bracket like other vehicle connectors. I wired this mount on both vehicles and then made a two wire lead to connect them. I used velcro quick straps to velcro this wire loom to my 7 lead connector loom.
