Toad miles per year for non full timers\snowbirds\non retired
Hi folks,
I have a question for those who still work and cannot drive south for winter.
How many ball park miles a year do you put on your toad when you take it on rv trips (not towing mileage or as a daily driver at home)?
Thanks,

I would estimate 600 - 1000 mi / month. Some weeks a few longer trips sightseeing others more local.

We use our coach (it’s our first RV) between 5 and 6 months a year, and in a bit less than 4 years it has 32,500 miles on it. Our Cherokee which we got 4 years ago (got it a couple weeks after we placed the order on the RV) has 28,000 miles on it.
When we are “home” the Cherokee usually sits most of the time (in fact, it’s on a battery tender right now and hasn’t moved in over a week), while we drive our other car most often.
I’ve compared RV miles to Toad miles on our trips and it’s usually been about 1/2 -2/3rds the miles accumulated on the Cherokee vs. miles accumulated on the RV (short and long trips seem to be about the same ratio) which seems to make sense given the total miles / use of both.
So much use of the Cherokee when Rving would be impractical, impossible, or just a major pain to do in the RV. Once we decided to buy a Class A, having a 4 down toad was a given and trading in our 3 year old Mercedes GLK 4Matic with only 20,000 was simply part of the equation. No question for us, a toad is a basic requirement for our Rving needs.

How do you like Cherokee vs the Merc?

Interesting, we’ve never missed the GLK at all; we have been (kind of surpringly) very pleasantly pleased with the Trailhawk. If I had a choice today, I’d take a Cherokee Trailhawk over a GLK (or whatever model it is today) over the Jeep and stick the extra money in my pocket in a heartbeat. We’ve done quite a few “un-improved” roads exploring during our travels, and finally got it “really” off road this summer going from Ouray, CO up to Animas Forks and back down through Silverton............
Btw, we are retirees (younger than most), so we don’t quite fit all of your criteria but hope my note was helpful.

In case it’s unclear (because it kinda is ) the above sentence is supposed to read:

Each of the last two winters, we spent two months traveling the southern USA. We live in Ontario. We put between 8-10,000 miles each year on the rv, and about 2500-3000 miles on the tow car. We would travel up to two hours in the car site seeing from where we were camped with the rv. More often than not, it was under an hour though.

It seems to me the answer to that is very much a matter of personal style. If you hang at the campground and only use the toad for an occasional store or restaurant trip, the non-towing mileage will be trivial. Maybe 20-50 miles per weekend RV trip? But if you tour the area and do a lot of sightseeing, you might easily run up 100+ miles/day. We've done both, depending on the area. At one of our favorite areas in Maine, there was a lot to see & do within a dozen miles of the campground and toad mileage was low even though we used it daily. At another favorite region (western North Carolina), we tended to take longer road trips (mountain scenery, water fall hunting, etc) and racked up considerably more miles.

W have towed our 2004 Jeep Wrangler with us since purchasing it new in 2005. While it's been towed in excess of 120,000 miles it has only 60,000 miles on the odometer since towed miles don't accumulate. So in 14 years we've driven it less than 4,300 miles per year on average.
It does get out of the garage at home a few times a month, but I'll bet over 90% of the miles shown on the odometer are accumulated when on vacation.
