Yep. Every time. Road grime on the exhaust. It burns off quickly

I have that occasionally with my Yaris and have never been able to find the source. So, if it is road grime, that relieves my mind.

We have always had the same issue on all of our toads. I think it's also from dirt and dust that collects on the fan belt and works into the belt when the engine is started. I've repeatedly checked the fan belt and can find no damage.

This seems to be more of any issue with Wranglers - maybe the increased height / driveline configuration ? I think the road has bits of rubber debris that stick onto the exhaust system in all cars. If you are driving the car, it burns off quickly so you don't notice the smell. When towing, it accumulates and smells when exhaust first gets hot.
Noticed it with our Wrangler. Now towing Grand Cherokee and barely noticeable.

I have a Nissan Frontier towed 4 down, with an aux. brake, sometime I smell the brakes, if we have been in a lot of stop and go traffic before getting to camp to disconnect.

YEP, got it here also. But I will say that I only noticed it on this TOAD. My other 2 TOADS I don't recall having that issue. It was also on a different MH, that had a full length mud flap in the rear.
My current MH only has Mud flaps right behind the rear tires. I wonder if that is the real difference???

I always thought it was road grime in the radiator and not the exhaust system. I'll have to check that next time we travel by covering the front of the Toad to keep air out.

Towed a 2007 Ranger for years never smelled anything. Now tow 2012 Flex and sometimes have the smell. Can't understand why a Jeep that sits high would have the issue if it is the exhaust that is as far off the road as my Ranger was. I have been reading a Jeep products having the smell on the forums for years. The belt theory is interesting.

I just got back from a 3100 mile road trip and I smell it on my toad when it runs and warms up but it does go away and it seems like it comes from the radiator so it must be road debris build up.

I get the odor some time after towing my Saturn Vue. Have never been able to fine where it's coming from. Goes away after a few days. Seems like if it was a component, whatever it is would have broken by now.
