It may be going dead because of the car, not the brake system. Is the ignition on in the car? What year/make/model of toad is it? Are you following the car manufacturers towing instructions to the letter? Perhaps including pulling a fuse?

2006 car..original battery? 'bout time for a new one. invest in an Optima and you shouldn't have a problem.
My '06 CRV battery was getting weak last year, got an optima and no more problems. More $.$$, but worth it.
JMHO and I'm sticking to it!

It may be your battery is getting old, However you have cited ONE of the three reasons I do not like those type of systems..

There is a system called "Towed Charge" or some such, basically it adds one more wire to your interconnect, this is connected to either an isolator up in the motor home or to a circuit breaker at the motor home end, Gives the towing vehicle (motor home) the ability to charge the towed.

Oh, the other reasons I don't like them?

You have to Install every time you tow

And "Oh, it's only a short trip, It is too much trouble to wrestle this thing in and out for just the few miles I'm goin... CRASH, Dang I wish I'd installed it"

Hi savitbound,
Go to TOAD-CHARGE Dinghy Vehicle Battery Charger/Maintainer and read about this product. It will keep your toad battery charged. This product is mounted in my toad.

Well that adresses ONE of my concerns, the other concern, which is what is bothering you, clearly needs addressing.. the Toad-Charge system linked to by GaryKD is also my recommendation in this case.
