We have the Subaru Forester with the MANUAL TRANS. Pulls nice and fairly light at 3000 lbs. Price is also reasonable compared to the Jeep. I just hook it and neutral key on position 1 for the steering unlock and go!

The 2005-2007 Jeep Liberties are being towed by a lot of people. On the internet a lot of people have negative comments about them, but are a lot lower in price than the CRV's and have a transfer case that will enable them to be towed 4 down. Dave

The new Jeeps are more comfortable than their predecessors. Easy to connect, easy to tow, and versatile enough for just about any kind of day-trip. \ken

We really like our manual Subaru Forester. It tows, 4 down, like it isn't there, rides well, handles well and has AWD(All Wheel Drive) for driving in bad weather.
Good luck, good health and safe travels!

Ditto on the Honda CR-V. Have toad almost 100,000 miles with No problems. Both 2WD and AWD. Dependable car, easy on Maintenance, Great resell with 4 doors for when you have passengers.

I tow a Jeep Wrangler 4-door model, and I'm in good company, as many others do too. BUT... it all boils down to your preferences and budget. Since you mentioned that it needs to handle rough weather, I would suggest that you go out and test drive a Jeep Wrangler (4 doors are nice), Jeep Grand Cherokee (if you want luxury), Ford Explorer (roomier inside than the Jeep GC, and loaded with technology and comforts). If you want a truck, the Ford F150 is a fantastic Toad. I believe that NONE of the Toyota products can be towed 4-wheels-down, but as some above have suggested, some Honda vehicles can be. BEFORE YOU BUY you need to VERIFY that the specific transmission/differential is compatible with towing 4-wheels down. Not every Jeep GC, for example, is. And I believe that the 2014/15 Hondas aren't either, but I won't swear on that. Do your research though, as the car salesman will probably not do it for you.

Well there are Jeeps and everything else they say. Made in Toledo Ohio (Wrangler) if that counts for anything in your consideration.
We went from a '94 Geo Tracker 5sp manual to a '15 Wrangler Willys Wheeler edition automatic. A little heavier but tows like it's not there. They are not your grandfathers Jeep anymore with more comfortable ride and any cool stuff you might want.
I'm not sure they even make them anymore but do not get a 2WD Wrangler automatic. They can not be towed four down.
Happy toad hunting.

While it doesn't have quite the 4X4 capabilities of the wrangler, the Jeep Cherokee has as much if not more comfort than the wrangler, and weighs about the same. If you want to be really comfortable (and your wallet can stand the shock), the Grand Cherokee might be the ticket. You must get 4X4, and the Active Drive II, to be towable 4 down. No matter what drive (FWD or 4X4) or Active Drive I or II, they cannot be towed on a dolly. Active Drive II and 4 down, or you're on a trailer.

I have a Hemi powered 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. This has been one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. I originally selected it because it was the only 4-down towable SUV with a tow rating over 7000# which I needed to tow my boat.
