TOAD survey exceptions to the rule!

I am looking for another used Toad vehicle. I just sold my old Honda CRV TOAD..... tired of a rough ride, hard seats, and it was damaged in an accident. I am looking for those who tow used Toyotas, GM, Chevys, Lexus, Subaru, etc, who tow them despite the warnings from manufacturers, etc. I have read all about the towable cars, but what about those that are not supposedly towable, but are towed anyway?

There are lots of good factory towables, big and small, cars and trucks. Is there a reason you are interested only in vehicles that are not factory towable?

Some more information would be helpful for those that might have answers for non-factory towables:
  • Weight limit of motorhome. Many C's will only tow up to 5000 lbs for example.
  • Type of towable you are looking for. Car, truck, SUV, does it matter?
  • Do you want to tow four-down, or would a dolly be acceptable to tow two-down? Many front wheel drive cars can be towed two-down on a dolly with no mods to the vehicle.

EDIT: Many vehicles with manual transmission *may* be towable four-down, but you would need to make sure there are no transmission lubrication/cooling issues that might require the addition of an external pump (at which point I'd say to just get a vehicle that is already towable with no such modification needed).

I saw a motorhomer using a newer Toyota 4Runner as a toad. I keep walking by his campsite to ask about it but they were never outside that I could see. Looked interesting.

We towed our '05 Honda Odyssey for 40,000 miles and drove it 108,000 more with no troubles. I know of others towing up to 2010 models, again with no troubles.

Towables

Thanks for the info! I already know about what can be towed behind my motor home, and have done it for a while. I just don't like most of the conventional vehicles out there, and I know that some of them are Toyotas etc. I am hoping to get a tally of who is towing what, and if I see something I like, I will probably get it,

Towable

Also, I only want to tow 4 down. I have already done the tow dolly thing, and it's not for me anymore!

We are towing a 2016 Acadia Denali behind our 2008 Tiffin Phaeton 40 QTH with a Roadmaster installed base plate and the new Nighthawk tow bar.

See signature for what we tow.

FWIW, many factory non-towable can be towed four-down with the addition of either a driveshaft disconnect for RWD vehicles, and a lube pump for FWD vehicles.

Some 4WD vehicles can be towed four-down if they have a selectable neutral for the transfer case.

AWD....???

I often see various Toyotas, Tacomas, and an occasional Lexus being towed. I think the main reason you don't see Toyotas listed as towable, is related to a corporate policy. They just don't want to authorize that anything be towed.

Here's a guide I found online for recent Toyota vehicles:

And only the Yaris FWD with a manual transmission can be towed 4 down which really limits your choices.

I dunno Don, you could be right. We've owned many Toyotas (and now a Lexus) and the only one we've been able to tow is our 86 4x4 pick-up that has a manual transfer case. Of course, I've never tried to tow the others...just went by the manual that says not to.
