Ouch! Really sorry to hear about that John. I sell Honda's here in the Greater Cincinnati and have a customer who was asking about using a manual 5speed 2015 FIT for a toad. I looked in the owner's manual and it said NO for flat towing and mentioned the transmission could be destroyed but didn't mention if they were talking auto or manual. I am getting ready to call Honda for clarification but could I ask you how did you determine that the FIT was towable? Was it automatic of 5speed.

Thanks for letting me pick your brain and very best wishes in getting your FIT back with a minimum of hassle.

Both the owners manual and Remco say the A/T is flat towable, the new ones aren't as they have the cvt trans.

This is from page 428 of the 2015 honda fit manual.
It does not specify between automatic and manual.

Improper towing such as towing behind a motorhome or other motor vehicle can damage the transmission.

it also states that dolly towing is OK.

Regards,
Dan

Yea Dan the new ones can't be towed flat so that makes them a poor choice as a toad in my book. A large number of newer cars are coming with cvt trannys , so the number of flat tows is dwindling including the CRV.

Guess those of us who own flat towabkes should take really good care of them. They may be worth gold in a few years

...but the 2015 FIT has a 5-speed manual tranny. Not a CVT. Manual still says no flat towing.

I think I'd dug into that further, I haven't looked at stick cars in a long time. Have you looked at remco towing for there opinion ?

I would have to agree on that part...As far as I know, there is no "special" lubrication in the manual trans which requires the engine side to be turning.
Have to wonder what the harm is if the tranny is in neutral and the output shaft is being turned when towing.

Regards,
Dan

JMO, if the owner's manual says it should not be towed then that is what you should go by.

Front drive manual trannys typically operate in a bath or gear oil. That doesn' t necessarily mean the engine has to be turning, but it does mean they might be susceptible to overheating, which is the main issue with towing.

For a 2015, though, the tranny warranty is the concern and if the owner manual says NO, then you have no warranty coverage if you do tow. They don't need a good reason to say NO - they may just be playing it safe cause they don't know themselves if there is any risk.
