I purchased an Advanta tow bar from Blue Ox 10,000# rating now I'm ready to hook up for my first tow (questions) since the instructions are not quite clear when you extend the bars and then attached to the base plate it says that the handles will pop up when locked so what is up is in an 1/2" or should the handles be at 90 degrees straight up and when they are locked are these bars fulley extended I'm not quite clear on this issue so are the rods fully extended or all the way in when towing toward my Motor Home.

They only pop up about 30 degrees. So your 1/2" is probably about it. You can tell by pulling the legs out on your own when it's not hooked up. They'll pop up and lock, and you'll have to push the handles back down to retract the legs. You always tow with the legs fully extended and locked.

My brother gave me a 10K Blue Ox tow bar. It must be an older one because it does not have handles to "lock" the chrome extensions in place. So, can anyone help me understand how this tow bar works?

Why not take a look at the Blue Ox tow bar page and check out their instructions for the kind he has?

Before you hook up.. Manually pull the bar out and observe the handles.

That is really the best and most accurate info I can give you

Then push the handle down and re-"Shrink" the bar so you can hook up

Alternative

Hook up, then by hand push the car back (Assumes you can do that) till one bar maxes out.. (They need not both max out at the exact same instant, they will once you start pulling the car)
