Tow bars
I have a 2008 Patriot Thunder (we just bought this coach) and will be towing a new 2010 GMC Yukon. On my other coach I used the Black Hawk tow bar, it worked ok but I was never fond of it. I am considering buying the Blue Ox tow bar, the one that remains on the rear of the coach when disconnected, rather than on the front of the car.
any opinions about your experiences with Blue Ox? Also, the rock shield that mounts on the tow bar?
I have never used a separate braking system towing and we have been motorhoming around for 8 years, but I am considering doing so. Any helpful information about equipment would be most appreciated.

We use the big Blue Ox towbar, the Aventa LX, which is rated for 10,000 lbs. That's probably the one you would want to use with a Yukon. Works very well. We also just recently got the Kargard shield for our current trip to Alaska. It's a bit finicky to set up the first time, since it has to be adjusted to the specific configuration of towbar attach points, but I think it works well.
If your coach has air brakes, I think the SMI AFO is a very nice brake system. I think Blue Ox sells a similar one, but they don't make it.

I use the same tow bar as Joe and have been very happy with it. I use a Brake Buddy Classic but I'm not sure it's ever worked properly.

We're going to use the Blue Ox aventa LX also along with a Protec-a-tow . For braking going with the Blue Ox "Patriot" fairly new on the market ,so I can't find too much of a history on how it is working for people. Hope it is as good as they say it is.

We had a Roadmaster Falcon before and it was ok - no major complaints except sometime hard to disconnect. Now have the Blue Ox Aventa LX and like it very much. I hear that the Roadmaster All Terrain tow bars are excellent too, but have no experience with them.

Definitely the Aventa LX is your best bet with the big vehicle. Braking I'd stick with BX there and go with the Patriot. We bought ours recently and so far have had really good luck.

I pull a 2000 Z71 Tahoe with a Aventa LX with a M&C (maybe M&G) brake set up. The Aventa is very easy to put on the Tahoe, doesn't need to be level or lined up .
The brake system requires only to connect the air hose and electrical line to the coach and the Tahoe (plus safety cables). Only need to open the Tahoe door to put the transfer case in neutral. Very simple and clean to do.

I am very happy with my Blue Ox.
As to supplemental braking system.. Well Mr. Lucky (You are lucky cause in all the time you never used one you never wished you had ont)
My choice is the US-Gear Unified Brake Decelarator, This works for all combinations of vehicles.
The M&G Air over Hydraulic is a good choice where it can be used as well.
There are some others Stay & Play, Air Force One
AVOID the "All in one" systems like Brake Buddy.. Too easy to say "Oh, it's too much trouble to install it for this short trip.. CRASH!< Wish I'd installed it.
