Tow dolly

We have a 2003 gulf stream workhorse chassis. We are towing a 2005 ford freestyle on a tow dolly. We are wanting to move to all 4 wheels down. Our question is how much easier on the engine if any will we have. Will it help going up the hills. We are thinking about a ford edge as our tow car. Thanks for any ideas or help

You are free wheeling 4 wheels on the ground either way so should not make a difference. I used a tow dolly with my 2003 workhorse for about 30k miles and never had any trouble including crossing the rockies a few times. But I flat tow now which is MUCH easier with set up and disconnecting.

The only thing that matters going uphill is the total weight, either dolly+toad or tow bar+ toad. If the 4-down configuration weighs slightly less than the dolly + toad, then you are slightly better off.

Frankly though, I doubt if it makes much difference. The only real question is whether the Edge you want is heavier than the Freestyle. Probably not much difference there, either.
