tow dolly
Do you need to have license plates on a tow dolly? Thinking of getting one. Do they give you a title?

Here in New Mexico I had to get a trailer plate. I got a cert of manufacturer and country of origin as well as an ID (Like a VIN) tag to put on the dolly.
New Mexico will let you license a trailer for life for about $45. I got a sticker for the plate that just says PERM and never have to renew. Your State may vary.

in penna. no to both of your questions. think about brakes though. if you are wired for a brake controller in your coach electric would work if no wiring or brake controller look into surge brakes

No in Kansas for both. You can buy a tag at many trailer shops that says, "Kansas under 2M". Doesn't mean anything but in those states where you need a tag, well, you got one.

What state do you live in, that's all that matters? If your home state does not require a plate then you are good to tow in any state or province.

Hi,
I have been using a tow dolly since 2000 and have nevedr registered it or put a tag on it. I have taken it to Alaska and most of the lower 48 states with no problems. I do however carry a copy of the title that comes with the dolly.
You should have brakes whether electric or surge. I have electric brakes on mine and instaled a brake controller in the RV.
Lastly if getting a tow dolly you should look for one that has a steering mechanism like my Roadmaster 2000. I also installed on mine a third wheel so I can push it around in a CG if I have too plus a spare tire.
I just purchased a vehicle that doesn't need a tow doly but I will use my tow dolly because I like it. A lot of Rvers say it is a pain but it isn't. When you go to cg just ask for a pul through site and if you don't have pull through sites then just disconnect and push it either on the side of RV or in back of it.
Hope this helps!

I am getting a Kar Kaddy 460 SS Demco tow dolly. I am In Texas. If Texas does not require Plates how does that work going into and thru other states and Canada? This dolly has surge brakes.

In Florida, no to both questions.
When I purchased the dolly, I received a Certificate of Origin, from the manufacturer.

Texas does not require a tag. Other states recognize this requirement.

Bigeagle, I did all the same-kar kaddy SS PPl etc. I assume you are going to assemble it yourself? It's not that hard, all you need is a torque wrench and about 2 hours.

Thats where I bought mind also. Make sure you check the straps that come with the dolly. Mine were frayed due to the way they had been attached to the dolly during shipping. Demco immediately sent me new ones with just a phone call.
