Required in some states and necessary everywhere.
I have yet to understand why people notice that you need more power to accelerate when towing a towed, then think they don't need more stopping power with a towed attached.
The laws of physics aren't suspended when towing.

Good morning. Yes, you need brakes. I have a Demco Kar Kaddy and love it. It costs more than many but tows like a dream. You'll hardly know it's behind you. It has steering and tracks right along with the tow vehicle. Good luck.

I tow my Kia Soul on a Stehl Tow Dolly, with surge, disk brakes.

25,000 miles and counting. The web site says they are sold in every state.

Several dolly brands have optional brakes. Are you sure they aren't available for the one you bought? It's basically just a swap of the wheel hubs for a braked type, plus some wiring.

If you want to get a new dolly with brakes, I would suggest a major brand such as Master Tow, Stehl, or Kar Kaddy

My neighbor has towed his Kia Soul on a 2014 Master Tow dolly with surge brakes at least 30k miles in the last 3 years with no problems at all. He is very happy with both.

Hi Susan! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

I can't answer your dolly questions! Personally, I would never use one! Keep her between the ditches!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Check to see if your dolly has the mounting brackets for brakes, it may be cheaper to add them to your current dolly than sell for a loss and repurchase.

What brand is it?

Brakes can be added, contact the facility that made the dolly. Surge couples can be bought and added as well as brake brackets or simply swap out the axle. I would trade off the close of each approach.

Tow Dolly Brakes

We have had the Acme EZTow Dolly for at least 8 years and have not had any problems. Bought with surge brakes and have replaced them once, and tires twice. Would buy it again! Parts and tires easily available. We tow a 2003 Honda Accord.

OP says it's a custom made dolly. They need to find the manufacturer of the axle and see if new backing plates with brakes are available.
