Does anyone know if there is a list of the Tag/Registration requirements for the use of a Auto Tow Dolly for the individual states.

Hi pace89,
If you follow the rules in your home (where you're rig is titled) state, you are good in all the rest of the states. Florida does not require a tag on a tow dolly. Therefore, I'm okay go travel the USA without a tag on the dolly.

in washington, you do not need to register a tow dolly as long as a licensed vehicle is on the dolly. if you are towing the dolly empty, you are subject to a citation.
i registered my dolly as a trailer with a small motorcycle type license plate. if memory serves, it costs about $30 a year. i am not at home now. when i find my registration, i will update that number if necessary.

It's a trailer and has to conform to the rules for them in your home state. Other states will accept as valid whatever is legal for your home state (reciprocity), so you do not need to worry about them.

As someone said, you only need one requirement.. The one for the state in which the tow vehicle is registered.

So for Michigan. I visit the SOM - State of Michigan web site, drill down to the Michigan Vehicle Code, and there is the requirement.. FOR ME.

Your state... IF not Michigan, may have alternative requirements.

Should you choose to tow 4-down (Which by the way many of use recommend and prefer) then be aware that a common theme here is "I'm towing a car, not a trailer, so those trailer laws do not apply (Has to do with aux-brakes usually)

Well, I did the research and in Michigan, a car in tow *IS* a Trailer under the law. so brakes,,, Needed
