Tow dolly tie down problems

Due to an unfortunate problem with my toad, I'm currently towing my Passat with a MasterTow 77T dolly. Towing is working fine, my problem is unloading. The clearance between the wheels and front air dam on the Passat is too small to allow me to straighten out the strap winch to release the strap. I'm sure this isn't the only car with this problem. How do others handle this? To release the strap I had to use a pair of channel lock pliers to release the catch and get enough slack to pull the strap out.

I have the same issue with towing my Camry. I raise the handle and use a medium size phillips head screwdriver placed in the round hole of the locking bar. You can then pry down the locking bar to release the tension. Open the handle all the way and unwind the strap. Easy Peezy. I hope this helps.

Same problem with our Demco KK-460 and Honda Odyssey, but I can still force it by just with my hand so far.
