Tow Jeep Grand Cherokee?
I'm in the process of shopping for a 2002/2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee as a towable (4 down) vehicle, it will only be towed several times a year. I was told that even though the "Select-Trac" and "Quadra-Drive" both contain N (Neutral) positions only the "Select-Trac" can be towed 4 down. Can anyone out there give me some correct info on this? Thanks in advance for your help.

We have towed a '98 and an '04 Grand Cherokee with Quadra-Trac transfer cases and both were OK for that. There is also a position on the key to unlock steering wheel and still have ignition off. Probably one of the easier toads around. We now have an
enclave and it isn't near as easy to rig up to tow.

2004 WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee Here is a link to an online manual for the 2004. Go to page 231 and you'll see a warning (Recreational towing is not available on Quadra-Trac I equipped vehicles)
I have a 98 grand cherokee and it does not have the same warning in the owner's manual.

Not sure what the Quadra -Trac 1 is as ours where both Quadra-Trac 11. Guess the OP will have to make sure it is a(11). Not sure about the Select Trac at all.

We have an '04 GC Limited with the QuadraTrac II that we've towed about 40K miles with no problems. I remember when I was doing research on what to buy that the QuadraTrac I could not be towed 4 down. Don't know about SelecTrac.
Be sure to have the key in the proper position to unlock the steering wheel (don't ask me how I know) before moving too far.

Jeep - 4x4 Basics - How Jeep 4x4 Systems Work - Quadra-Trac II - 4WD SUVs
Interesting enough here is another a jeep page that explains the difference between quadra trac I and II. From what I can tell the trac I system doesn't have a transfer case with a selectable range. On my 98 I have a neutral position on the transfer case.

Thanks for all the good info, I've learned that to be towed the Jeep being towed must have a transfer box with an N position that can be manually selected.

And be sure to release the parking brake before towing it 400 miles on your maiden voyage. Don't ask me how I know either...

LOL I wouldn't admit to that. I'd blame it on my wife.

And don't forget to turn the key so that the steering wheel turns.. DAVID did that! There are lots of Wal-Marts with tire shops on the interstates.

I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee Limited with Qudra-Trac. The manual indicates it is ok to tow four down. I have towed it over 60,000 miles.

2010 grand cherokee are great for towing. but the new 2011 grand cherokee went up in weight to 5300 and more in weight. I would only tow that much with a big diesel
