Tow vehicle

Does anyone tow a 2011 Ford Escape XLT on all four tires? If so, do you have to do anything to the vehicle to prepare it for towing? We are currently towing our Altima on a dolly and we are researching for a flat tow vehicle. Thanks

The owners manual says 4 down only in emergencies for 50 miles at max of 35 mph. It can be towed with a dolly with rear wheels down.

The 2011 Dinghy Towing Guide listed all 2011 Escape models as towable, but I heard that Ford had to renege on some of them. You need to be specific about the Escape configuration - the 4 is different than the V6 and both are different than the Hybrid, as far as the driveline is concerned. One maybe towable while another is other not.

There are many reports of burned up trannys on Escapes, though Ford was replacing them under warranty. I heard there was a TSB about tranny fluid levels, then maybe another withdrawing the towable status? Maybe a call to Ford Customer Service would get an official answer? The Escape is one sharp little SUV and would make a great toad if it works.
Alternative in that size is the Honda CRV and Chevy Equinox, both towable without mods.

Gary,

The owners manual says you can recreationally tow automatic four down or with dolly. Four wheel drive can only be towed four down. In either case you must follow certain procedures such as no more than 65 mph, for automatic, 70 for manual. You must also run the vehicle for 5 minutes before towing and then every 6 hours you must start it up and go through, R,N, and D. You are also supposed to take it to a Ford dealership to have them check transmission fluid level for towing.

This of course goes against the owners manual also saying to flat tow in emergency situations only no farther than 50 miles. As you said there are alot of trannys being burned up. We have the sister/brother of the Escape a Mercury Mariner Hybrid. There is alot of confusion on this vehicle and Ford goes back and forth even today. I e-mailed them and requested to know if I could do it or not. Said I could even though the dealership told me emergency conditions only.
