Towed Vehicle Chip Protection

My dad towed a car on a dolly from MA to FL years ago behind a Winnebago Chieftain and when he arrived at the campsite the towed vehicle had lots of stone chips (I mean serious damage). He had the goofy whiskers hanging down from the rear bumper however it didn't do the job. The following year I bought him a mask for the nose of the Neon and the wind flopping the fabric around chafed the paint nearly as bad as the stone damage.

Question: How do I keep my bride's brand new Kia Soul from being sand blasted behind my rig? I have not decided on dolly or trailer yet but it will not be an enclosed trailer.

A friend used one of the horizontal fabric protectors, and claimed it worked very well. I'm not sure what company makes this, but it's a sheet that mounts at the lower rear of the motorhome, fits over the tow bars, and extends right up to the front edge of the towed car. Kinda like a flat "fan"...

Here's a link to that web site: Protect-a-Tow

And a link to a discussion on this product: http://www.irv2.com/forums/f85/prote...een-88843.html

You may or may not have a problem at all, depending on the roads traveled and the tendency of the coach to kick up debris or not. Personally, I've never seen much need for toad protection except when we toured Alaska, where there are many gravel roads or gravel repairs in paved roads.

As you already know, the grass skirts don't really protect anything. The solid rubber ones help some, but only if they are not too low. Too low and they actually kick up debris rather than stop it. A front cover (bra) for the toad works if properly fitted and installed so there is no flapping. I made my own when we traveled Alaska and it worked fine. The tow bar mounted screens also ar reputed to work well, but I've never used on myself.

Protect a Tow

The Protect-a-Tow seems like it might work. Messing up Barb's brand new car would not bode well for me. Wonder how it would work on a dolly? I imagine pretty much the same deal.

Thanks, guys. And yes, save the wave.

I installed the protect a tow in Nov to protect my new CRV, after over 3000 miles I don't have one ding on the CRV. It also kept oil blow by off the CRV and the back of the MH. My rear camera stayed clean during rainy weather also. Well worth the money. It goes under the back of the MH, under the tow bar and under the car. I do not run a rear rock guard.

Check out road master tow defender. Works well; you don't need the guardian product. http://www.roadmasterinc.com/product...ect_store.html

I just spoke with a fellow RV'er from Oregon that pulls an '05 Subaru Forester four down for a toad. He has a product from Coastline Cover Company out of CA. He has been extremely happy with the product. Their products are made vehicle specific. This product covers from below the front bumper, up over the grill, hood and windshield. It is a very heavy product. But their website appears to be deactiviated. Does anyone know if they are still in business?

I towed a 2003 PT Cruiser behind my 32 Ft. Winnebago Brave to lLaska and back from Cleveland, Ohio in 2005. I had purchased a Roadmaster Defender from a private party and made brackets to adapt to my Blue Ox tow bar. The Defender protected the front of the PT Cruiser from any damage. My only mistake was not getting the Defender low enough to cover the gravel pan below the bumper. That had gravel dings on it. As long as the Defender covers the entire front of the toad, it does a great job.
