Like many on this forum, I tow a Wrangler. Mine is a lot newer - 2008 - but one thing about the Wrangler is that when it comes to enginer/transmission set-up, I don't think it's changed all that much. That's why it is one of the very few 4WD vehicles which can be easily towed 4 Down.
Assuming you have a transfer case that allows you to select 2 WD versus 4 WD with a center selection for neutral, you should be able to disconnect the tranny from the drive shaft by putting that transfer lever into neutral and tow 4 down. But it would be best to check with Jeep/Chrysler to be sure unless somebody here is towing an 89, which I expect to be the case.
