Thanks for all the previous information ref. driveshaft removal. I have an opportunity to buy a 89 Wrangler 6cyl. Automatic in very nice condition. I have searched everywhere for an Owners manual or other info on towing this vehicle but apparently nothing available that I can find on something 20+ yrs. old.

Can anybody give me definiative info on whether or not the Automatic can be towed wheels down the same as a manual transmission without driveshaft disconnect. Would the automatic require driveshaft disconnect? Need to find out before completing the purchase. Thanks Much.

Like many on this forum, I tow a Wrangler. Mine is a lot newer - 2008 - but one thing about the Wrangler is that when it comes to enginer/transmission set-up, I don't think it's changed all that much. That's why it is one of the very few 4WD vehicles which can be easily towed 4 Down.

Assuming you have a transfer case that allows you to select 2 WD versus 4 WD with a center selection for neutral, you should be able to disconnect the tranny from the drive shaft by putting that transfer lever into neutral and tow 4 down. But it would be best to check with Jeep/Chrysler to be sure unless somebody here is towing an 89, which I expect to be the case.

Remco says "yes" to '88-2010 with a transfer case with neutral (pre '88 no except with disconnect)
I have several friends with various year automatics that do it on a regular basis. If the speedo cable is connected to the tailshaft you'll probably add miles unless you unscrew it.

My wrangler is a 2000, no problem towing 4 down. Trans in park, tranfer case in neutral. Mine had a steering lock, so I disabled that so I can tow without the key in.
