Towing a 15 3500HD Silverado

Can anyone confirm this. I have read the owners manual on dinghy towing my 2015 3500HD silverado duramax and it says the following:

Follow these steps to dinghy tow:
1. Position the vehicle being towed
behind the tow vehicle, facing
forward and on a level surface.
2. Securely attach the vehicle
being towed to the tow vehicle.
3. Apply the parking brake and
start the engine.
4. Shift the transfer case to
N (Neutral). See “Shifting into
N (Neutral)” under Four-Wheel
Drive on page 9-42 for the
proper procedure. Check that
the vehicle is in N (Neutral) by
shifting the transmission to
R (Reverse) and then to D
(Drive). There should be no
movement of the vehicle while
shifting.
5. With the transmission in D
(Drive), turn the ignition to ACC/
ACCESSORY.
{Caution
Failure to disconnect the negative
battery cable or to have it contact
the terminals can cause damage
to the vehicle.
6. Disconnect the negative battery
cable at the battery and secure
the nut and bolt. Cover the
negative battery post with a
non-conductive material to
prevent any contact with the
negative battery terminal.
7. Shift the transmission to
P (Park).
{Caution
If the steering column is locked,
vehicle damage may occur.
8. Move the steering wheel to
make sure the steering column
is unlocked.
9. Release the parking brake.
10. Keep the ignition key in the
towed vehicle in ACC/
ACCESSORY to prevent the
steering column from locking.

It states to put the vehicle in Park to tow it. Is this correct? or should the transmission be in neutral?

Has anyone towed a similar truck that can chime in?

We've been pulling our 1500 Silverado with the transmission in park for the past 50,000 miles and haven't had a problem. Only difference in the procedure we use is that we don't have to put the key in ACC as our steering column does not lock with the key removed.

Yes, most vehicles are towed with the transfer case in neutral, and the tranny in gear or Park. The reason? To keep the turning of the transfer case output shaft from turning the transfer case input shaft and the tranny output shaft due to fluid friction. It would turn ever so slow, but the transmission output shaft gets its lube from the rotation of the tranny input shaft, and with the engine off, the tranny input shaft will not be rotating.

Transfer case to neutral - disconnects engine/transmission from drive train allowing free-wheeling.

Automatic transmission to park - to ensure no parasitic drag rotates transmission components that are not being lubricated (without engine running the pump in the front of the transmission is not pumping).
