Towing a 1987 Jeep Cherokee 4x4

I just had a tow bar installed on my 1987 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 so that I can tow it behind my class A. I was under the impression that if the transfer case was in neutral and the automatic transmission was in Park or Neutral that it could be towed with all four wheels down. However a neighbor has informed me that the driveshafts need to be disconnected on this model/year? I don't have an owners manual to refer to. Has anyone had any experience towing this particular year Jeep? Any help would be appreciated!

Transfer case to neutral. Automatic transmission in park. Manual transmission in any gear. Ensure the steering column is unlocked. Do not disconnect driveshafts...

According to Remco Towing, your neighbor is correct tour Jeep is not towable.

I suggest calling Remco to confirm.

Jeep has used various drive line components over the years and members have reported that some are not towable. This is the case with other manufacturers as well.

'87 was an odd year, for Wranglers as well, it may have to do with the transfer case they used that year, or perhaps the rear-end which they changed in '88.

Towing Jeep Cherokee 4x4

Per Route 66's suggestion I contacted Remco and they were extremely helpful and informative. It would seem that 1984 thru 1987 were odd years for Jeeps. Some of the Jeeps had transfer cases that could be towed by putting them in neutral, others had to have the driveshaft disconnected! There is a tag on the transfer case that has a serial number on it, and they can tell you which transfer case you have by this number. I got lucky, I can tow with mine in neutral without disconnecting the driveshaft. If anyone has any doubts or questions concerning the towability of their vehicle, I would definitely contact them! My thanks to everyone that responded to my post!
