Smile Towing a 1998 Chevy Tracker 4 wheels down

Hi, We have recently purchased a motorhome for the first time and want to tow a vehicle 4 wheels down. I already made the mistake of buying a tow dolly - not thinking about that we are TOO OLD to even move it - now we will have to sell it. We are looking at an older Vehicle - just for a tow Vehicle -but don't know if it can be towed 4 wheels down. Does anyone know if a 1998 Chevy Tracker Sport with an Automatic Transmission and 4 wheel drive can be towed 4 wheels down without hurting the transmission or modifications to the transmission? I don't want to make another costly mistake.

According to Application Charts | Remco Towing, the 1999-2004 Chevy Tracker auto/4 wheel drive is towable as is. The 1998 Geo Tracker is also towable. I'm not sure if this means there isn't a 1998 Chevy Tracker. I would suggest checking the vehicles manual for confirmation.

Neither Remco or the Motorhome Magazine list the '98 Tracker. Our '99 Grand Vitara (which is same as a Tracker) with 4WD is Towable 4 down with either Manual or Automatic. Manual= Transfer case in neutral, trans in 2nd, Auto= Transfer case in neutral, trans in park. Key must always be in "Acc" mode for towing. Speed not to exceed 55mph, stop every 250 miles and run engine in either park or 2nd gear accordingly.

+Tracker towing

We have been towing 93 geo tracker 4 down for a couple of years. The only thing we had to change was from auto hubs which it had to manual hubs and then same as other post check list.

The 98 Geo Tracker is a different drive train than the 99, so the 99+ info does not apply. However, Remco Towing charts show that the 93-98 Geo Tracker 4WD automatic is also towable as is. I would be cautious about the manual front wheel hubs, though. As I recall, a friend who had the 2-door Tracker Sport had to make sure the manual hubs on the front wheels were disengaged (which they normally are except when in 4WD mode). Not a big deal, just something to check before towing.

You can review the 1998 Geo Tracker towing info here:

After reading the Owners Manual - it reads that if it is an Automatic Transmission and the Hubs are Automatic, it Cannot be towed 4 wheels down. With an Automatic Transmission - it has to be Manual Locking Hubs to be towed with 4 Wheels Down. I did some checking and the Hubs are pretty easily converted to Manual, so I decided to get the Car. Hopefully, I am on the right track now. Thanks a Million for All of Your Help
